History of Cyprus

It is thought that the first inhabitants of Cyprus came to the island from Syria and Palestine between 7000-6500 BC while they were escaping from enemy attacks and natural disasters on rafts. They could actually see the mountains of their original countries from the island on clear cloudless days. Being the most important island of eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus got its name starting from the Bronze Age, from the rich copper mines operated on the island. It location and its rich natural resources such as olive, grain and grapes made it one of the important trade centers. All these made Cyprus very attractive for numerous civilizations. Every civilization left many cultural treasures behind making the island center of attention. Egyptians, Assyrians, Phoenicians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Luzinyans, Venetians and Ottomans are some of the most important civilizations ever to rule the island. Even today Cyprus is still one of the most attractive places on earth with its natural beauty and cultural attractions.
